Bio
Dr. Anthony J. Costa is an FRCSC certified orthopaedic surgeon with sub-specialty interest in complex knee-related conditions, as well as over 15 years of independent practice experience managing most general orthopaedic problems (including hip and knee arthritis, sports related knee and shoulder conditions, and multi-extremity orthopaedic trauma).
Dr. Costa graduated from the University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine in 2006. From 2006-2011, Dr. Costa completed his orthopaedic residency training at the University of British Columbia. From 2011-2012 he undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in orthopaedic knee-related surgery and lower extremity trauma at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. There, he worked under world renowned orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Myles Coolican, and Dr. David Parker (former Dr. Peter Fowler Fellow, and current president of International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). Additionally, Dr. Costa had the privilege of working closely with his co-fellow at that time, Dr. Sebastian Lustig, co-authoring multiple knee-related research publications and podium presentations.
After completing his fellowship in Australia, Dr. Costa began independent practice in Prince George, BC in 2012. From 2012-2021, Dr. Costa worked in Prince George at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, practicing general orthopaedics. During that time, Dr. Costa also provided orthopaedic outreach services to several northern communities in the surrounding area (including Vanderhoof and Smithers BC), and provided orthopaedic support for the Prince George Cougars WHL hockey team. In 2021, Dr. Costa had the privilege of acting as Chief Medical Officer for the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship in Calgary AB, before closing his public BC practice and relocating permanently to Calgary in 2022.
From 2022-2023, Dr. Costa worked as a locum orthopaedic surgeon at South Health Campus in Calgary, with a focus on shoulder reconstruction and general orthopaedic trauma. During that time, Dr. Costa also concurrently completed the Harvard Surgical Leadership Program, graduating with commendation.
In 2025, Dr. Costa travelled to Lyon, France and completed additional advanced training in Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy of the Knee, Hip Surgery in the orthopedic and surgery and sports medicine department- Lyon Croix-Rousse University Hospital under the tutelage of his friend and colleague Dr. Lustig! There, his training focused on robotic assisted knee arthroplasty and direct anterior approach total hip replacements.
Dr. Costa currently lives in Calgary AB and is fully licensed to practice in Alberta and British Columbia. He holds a faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Costa maintains an active private orthopaedic practice at Ortho South, and works collaboratively with Gateway Surgery in Calgary, and the Specialist Referral Clinic and Cambie Surgery in Vancouver.
Outside of orthopaedics, Dr. Costa (along with his wife and two young boys) can frequently be found enjoying the many recreational opportunities available in BC and Alberta, including hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, surfing, skiing, snowboarding, and of course plenty of hockey!

Bio
Dr. Emmanuel Michael Illical is a dual board certified (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery) and dual fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in adult reconstruction (hip and knee arthroplasty) and orthopaedic trauma.
Dr. Illical completed his medical school training at the University of Alberta in 2006 and orthopaedic residency at the University of Calgary in 2011. He subsequently completed his Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Ottawa from 2011-2012 under the direction of Dr. Paul Beaule, one of the pioneers of direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in Canada. From 2012-2013, Dr. Illical completed his orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he gained a wealth of experience at one of the busiest level 1 trauma centers in the United States.
After locuming in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario from 2013-2015, Dr. Illical moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center. SUNY Downstate the largest academic center in Brooklyn, and Kings County Hospital Center is one of the first level 1 trauma centers established in the United States. He served as the primary orthopaedic trauma surgeon for all pelvis and acetabular fractures and the most complex fractures and injuries (polytrauma patients, peri-articular fractures, and peri-prosthetic fractures).
After he met his wife, Dr. Illical moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2018, and served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Einstein Healthcare Network. He again served in a similar role as the primary orthopaedic trauma surgeon for all complex orthopaedic trauma injuries and was the primary adult reconstruction surgeon for difficult primary total joint arthroplasty and revision total joint arthroplasty.
In 2020, Dr. Illical moved back to Canada. He currently has a public practice in Calgary, Alberta, at South Health Campus Hospital. He has a high-volume hip and knee arthroplasty practice in addition to his orthopaedic trauma practice. Within his total joint arthroplasty practice, Dr. Illical has a special interest in direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty and cementless total knee arthroplasty.
Dr. Illical prides himself in being academically active. He is involved in both residency and fellowship training within the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary. He also serves as the Quality Improvement and Safety Lead for the Section. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), Canadian Orthopaedic Trauma Society (COTS), AOTrauma North America, Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS), American Association of Orthopaedic Association (AAOS), and the Canadian Orthopaedic Society.
Outside of his orthopaedic practice, Dr. Illical loves spending time with his wife and their two young children.
Dr. Wheat Hozack offers the following procedures in her private practice:
Bio
Dr. Joan Wheat Hozack is a general orthopaedic surgeon practicing publicly in Lloydminster AB/SK. Her private practice is located in Vancouver BC. She completed her medical degree at the University of Calgary, followed by an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Calgary. She then undertook an additional year of advanced fellowship training in Christchurch, New Zealand, gaining extensive experience in trauma surgery, joint replacement (arthroplasty), sports knee surgery, and hand and wrist conditions.
Dr. Wheat Hozack practices general orthopaedic surgery across a broad range of conditions, with the exception of spine surgery and orthopaedic oncology. Her current clinical practice focuses primarily on trauma care, hip and knee arthroplasty, and sports-related knee surgery, with a smaller component of hand and wrist surgery and elective paediatric orthopaedic care.
She is committed to providing evidence-based, patient-centred care, with a strong emphasis on functional recovery, attention to detail, and spending adequate time with patients. She values building strong patient-physician relationships and prioritizes patient satisfaction through clear communication, thoughtful decision-making, and individualized care.
Dr. Ravi Pullela, MD, FRCPC is a Consultant Anaesthesiologist in Calgary, Alberta, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He completed his specialist training in Anaesthesiology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Passionate about education, Dr. Pullela is deeply involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. His dedication to learners has been recognized through multiple teaching awards, reflecting his genuine enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and supporting growth.
Dr. Pullela is an integral part of the Ortho South team, providing dedicated Anaesthesia support for all Ortho South surgical cases completed in Vancouver. His exceptional skill in ultrasound guided injections and nerve blocks helps ensure patients have the best surgical care experience possible.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Pullela treasures time with his family, is a proud husband, and the father of two young children.
