Knee Arthroscopy

Minimally invasive surgery for a wide range of knee conditions

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows the inside of the knee joint to be examined and treated through small incisions using a high-definition camera and specialized instruments.

Arthroscopy is not a single operation, but rather a surgical approach used to diagnose and treat many different knee conditions. Some procedures are performed entirely arthroscopically, while others combine arthroscopy with additional reconstructive techniques when appropriate.

Conditions Commonly Treated

Knee arthroscopy may be used in the management of:

  • Meniscus tears
  • Articular cartilage injuries
  • Loose bodies
  • Synovial disorders
  • Mechanical catching or locking
  • Selected sports injuries
  • Portions of patellofemoral stabilization procedures
  • Assessment and treatment of complex knee pathology

Common Arthroscopic Procedures

Depending on your diagnosis, surgery may include:

  • Partial meniscectomy
  • Meniscal repair
  • Chondroplasty (cartilage smoothing)
  • Loose body removal
  • Synovectomy
  • Diagnostic arthroscopy
  • Treatment of focal cartilage injuries
  • Arthroscopic procedures performed alongside ligament or stabilization surgery

Is Arthroscopy Always Appropriate?

No.

Many knee conditions improve with physiotherapy, activity modification, injections, or other conservative treatments. In particular, arthroscopy is generally not recommended for most patients whose symptoms are primarily due to advanced osteoarthritis.

Following a comprehensive assessment, we will discuss whether surgery is likely to improve your symptoms and which treatment option best matches your goals.

Recovery

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed.

Simple procedures such as loose body removal or partial meniscectomy often allow relatively rapid recovery. More complex procedures, including meniscal repair or combined reconstructive surgery, require a longer rehabilitation program.

Your postoperative plan will be tailored to your specific procedure and activity goals.
